Okay, so I had a bit of an epiphany this week when the Modretro M64 dropped.
I’m a long-time C dev — that was my language of choice for a long time, I just love it so much.
And the Nintendo 64 was my favorite console of all time. Hence why I ordered the Modretro M64 and am so damn excited about it.
Then something clicked. I’ve had this idea for a game, Battlestone, that I had started building in Unity, with C#, as a PC game.
But the world just changed, and there’s now an opportunity to actually build N64 games again.
And guess what — N64 games are built in C.
So it feels like this is just too interesting not to go for. It also likely means pivoting the game idea, because an RTS with an N64 controller would be a little painful, and I don’t think quite as fun to play.
Ideating on new ideas, keeping the name and logo — everything else, clean slate to ideate on.
And of course, this means when my M64 comes, I’ll need to really play a lot of N64 games for inspiration!
Since I’m going game dev for the sake of building games, for fun, no strings attached, I feel no pressure or rush in coming up with the new idea.
I’m just going to get my M64, open that box of N64 games I have in storage, play, play, and play some more, and see what ideas come to me.
Then I’ll dust off my C knowledge, and start building.
